Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome back! I hope that everyone had a relaxing break and enjoyed the snow! We have some important dates that are coming up. We have a fieldtrip to the Planetarium on February 16th. The field trip costs $12.50. You can start paying online already, or you can send in money. I need the money by February 14th. Lunch order forms will be going home shortly. We are also going to have the first ARE talent show. If students want to participate they need to hand in their application by February 16th. Students can perform alone, or with a group. Jump Rope for the Heart will be February 12-23 for our track. Report cards will be going home Friday. Please send back the envelopes as soon as you can.
In reading we are starting a new unit. We will be working with classic literature, with a focus on Peter Pan. We will be reading a version in class together. Students are encouraged to read any classic they would like at home. We will be revising a scene from the book as a final task.
For math we are working on area and perimeter. We are focused on using tiles to find the area of objects at the moment. It is very common for students to define area and perimeter correctly, but then switch them when trying to solve the answer. Practicing problems at home will help with this.
In science we started Earth in the Solar System. We will be starting a moon tracking assignment tomorrow. Each night students will need to look at the moon and draw what it looks like. If you cannot see the moon then look online, but it is more meaningful for the student to see the moon themselves. Sometimes it is even easier to see in the morning. Weekends count for this as well. Thank you for your help.
This quarter we will also have Valentine’s Day. There will not be a class party, but we will have a card exchange on Valentines. Please make sure that if your child participates in the exchange that they have a card for every student in the class. Cards can be handmade or from the store. Please do not send in any food or candy Valentines. If you want to send in non-food items that is fine. I will send a class list soon.
I hope that everyone has a wonderful week!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bloodworth

Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are starting the countdown to track out. This time of year is very busy for everyone in and out of school. It is really important that everyone keeps up all the hard work they have been doing all quarter. We are going to the Book Fair Tuesday, December 5 to preview the books. We will be purchasing books Friday, December 8th. If there are any items your child would like to purchase please send them in with money that day.
In reading we are working on non-fiction reading and writing. The class has learned about non-fiction text features, like headings, captions, and using a glossary. It is important to read some non-fiction items periodically at home as well. Please remember you’re your child should be reading for 20 minutes every night. Also, remember to continue filling out the Carolina Hurricanes Readvolution form online to log minutes and books.
In writing we are working on informative paragraphs and writing. They have written a few so far. They will be creating a small book with all the writing from this unit. The class will also be creating a “trading card” about a frog they chose to research.
In science we are working on force and motion. This is a new unit to third grade this year. We will be learning about force, friction, how objects change direction, and how they change speed. The final assessment will be December 20th. The class will then end the quarter with a fun challenge based on force and motion. If you have any matchbox cars we can borrow please send those in by Wednesday, December 6th.
For math we are still working on multiplication and division. We will wrap this unit up around December 8th. The class will finish the quarter out by learning about graphing. Even though we will not be directly working with multiplication and division it will still be important that kids practice their math facts. We will need these skills again for area and perimeter when we track back in. Reflex math is a great way to practice at home.
I hope that everyone has a wonderful week!

Mrs. Bloodworth

Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are heading into a crazy few weeks. Wednesday November 8th we have an in school field trip from Science is Fun. Friday November 10th we don’t have school. This is followed by a regular week, then we have an Early Release November 21st. Progress reports go home November 30th. We are still continuing the reading program through the Carolina Hurricanes. Please remember to login and fill out the chart for reading. Students should be reading every night for 20 minutes, so this is a great way to get rewarded for work they are already doing.
In reading we are finishing up our first unit this quarter. They have been learning about poetry and pourquoi tales. This week we will be talking about comparatives and superlatives. As part of the final assessment the class will have questions about comparatives and superlatives, as well as be writing their own pourquoi tales. We will have a frog festival where they share the stories with the class.
We just finished our science unit on states of matter. Now we are starting social studies. We will be learning about how to read and make maps, as well as learning about landforms and how people effect the environment. This will be about a two week unit. Once this is over we will switch back to science.
In math we are continuing work on multiplication and division. It is very important that students learn their math facts. Please continue to practice with them. Currently we have been using our skills to practice finding missing numbers in equations. We have a Test Wednesday November 8th on balancing equations. Using Reflex math at home is a great way to practice!
As we enter the holiday season please remember that we are still working hard in school. We will have assessments right up until the last day of the quarter. It is important that students are still completing homework.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bloodworth

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome back! This is going to be a fast quarter with the holidays. Just a few reminders as we are tracking in. Boosterthon payments were due before we tracked out. Please either pay online, or send in the money if you have not done so already. Red ribbon week is also underway. It is optional, but Monday (23rd) is Don’t let drugs mix you up, so students can wear mismatched clothes. Tuesday (24th) is Team together to make good choices, so they can wear clothes from their favorite team. Wednesday (26th) is the last day, and it is A “Minion” Reasons to be Drug and Bully Free. This means they can dress up like a minion (ex. yellow shirt and jeans). Report Cards go home Friday 27th. We also will have the book fair in December.
In reading we are going to start back with frogs. We will be starting with poetry on the topic and pour quoi tales. While reading students will e working on reading for gist and meaning. They will also be working on planning their steps in writing. This unit will be a combination of fiction and non-fiction text.
In science we are still working on our changes unit. This includes solids, liquids and gases. Before we tracked out the class started learning about the states of matter. We also completed a few experiments about how a solid can change. This unit will continue for the next couple of weeks.
In math we are continuing work on multiplication. Practicing math facts at home will greatly help. We are going to be moving away from just learning our facts, to applying the different properties of multiplication. The class has already learned about the commutative property, but will now learn about the associative, identity, and distributive property. There will be a math test Friday 27th.
We are going to be starting a new reading incentive program in conjunction with the Carolina Hurricanes. A red half sheet of paper will be going home on Monday with more information. The other tracks have already started. The program goes from Oct. 2-Jan. 12. Students will log their daily reading on the website https://goo.gl/ZDKdex, and get to fill out a hockey puck sticky on school for each book they complete. Thank you in advance for your help with this program. This is a county wide plan, and we have a school goal of reading 2,020 books.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bloodworth

Dear Parents/Guardians,
It is hard to believe this is the end quarter! September seemed to fly by. Just a reminder that Friday is an early release. We do not need to change rooms at track out, so student will not be bringing home all their supplies. They will be bringing home papers from this quarter so we can start fresh with empty folders. Please feel free to use these for some extra practice. Also, just another reminder that report cards are not going out until October 27th.
In reading we have finished working on the overcoming challenges unit. We will start a new unit when we track back in. Please continue to have your child read over the track out. We do a lot of non-fiction so please try to read some of those as well. The kids have access to Big Universe for some online books. Their username is wcp + their student id number. The password is just their id number, and the group username is wcpss.
In science we are working on the states of matter. This unit will carry over into the next quarter. We did an experiment yesterday in class with antacid tablets that the class enjoyed. We will continue discussing the three states of matter, as well as how items can change from one state to another.
In math we are working on multiplication. Practicing math facts at home will greatly help. We will be working on multiplication when we come back as well. Using reflex math at home can help with learning facts, and is a great review to use over track out. To log-in to Reflex go to reflexmath.com, then the students enter ebloodworth. Once they enter that they click on their name, and they are in. Another fun way to practice is through multiplication war. This is like the card game war, except instead of putting out one card each, you pull two, and multiply them together. The player with the greatest product then gets all four cards. If there is a tie, then you each put three cards face down, and pull two more to multiply. Again, the highest product gets all the cards.
I hope everyone has a wonderful track out!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bloodworth

Dear Parents/Guardians,
I hope that everyone enjoyed the nice weekend. Boosterton Fun Run is September 20th at 10:30. Parents are invited to come watch the class run. Thank you to those who have donated. There is a science test on Wednesday, and a math quiz Thursday. Just a reminder that Friday 29th is an early release.
In reading we are working on creating reading contracts. Each student picked two challenges they would like to overcome, and came up with strategies to help with that. We are also working on reading aloud with tone, proper rate, and emotions. Just a reminder about homework. Typically two nights a week the kids will have a passage and need to answer a question from there paper. These answers need to be more than one sentence. A lot of the responses are way too short. The other nights they need to read for 20 minutes to help build stamina.
In science we are working on the human body. We have learned about our bones, and where the major bones are located. They will need to know bones like the ribs, femur, etc. We have also discussed muscles and skin. A study guide will be going home this week. On Thursday we will be starting a new unit on matter.
In math we have started multiplication. The class will be learning different strategies for multiplication. They may be different from what you are used to seeing. Just a reminder, math notebooks can go home each night to help. Using reflex math at home will really help students practice their math facts. A letter went home earlier this year with their log in information. If you need the information again, please let me know. This unit will continue when we track back in as well.
Just a reminder as the quarter is wrapping up that report cards will not go home until October 27th. It is also important that students arrive at school on time. I understand mornings can be hectic, but this is a great time for students to complete any missing work they have.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
The quarter is moving quickly! The BOG’s are over, and the MCLASS testing is also finished. Just a reminder that August 31st is open house. We have the Government Fieldtrip September 5th. Please remember to send a bagged lunch that day if you did not request a lunch from the school. If you are interested in volunteering in the school, or as a chaperone, please make sure you come in and register to volunteer. Progress Reports will also go home this week.
We are continuing to work on overcoming challenges as a theme for reading. We are also using this in our informative writing paragraphs. The current focus is to practice planning a paragraph, organizing it correctly, and editing. Reading non-fiction texts at home will also help support our learning in class.
We started our science unit on bones, muscles, and skin last week. This unit includes learning and identifying bones, learning what muscles do, and why the skin is important. Students will not need to memorize every bone and muscle in the body, but they will need to identify some of the more major ones. We also learned about the scientific process last week by testing is a Gobstopper really changes color.
In math we are working on 2-dimensional figures. This unit deals with identifying shapes based on their attributes. We are currently working with quadrilaterals. Just a reminder, students are encouraged to bring their math notebook back and forth to help with what we learn in class.
Just a reminder, there will be nightly reading homework for twenty minutes. A homework notebook will be used to answer two questions a week based on a passage provided from school that matches our learning concept. Please make sure the responses are longer than one sentence. Math will be daily as well. Students will use a green folder for homework that will go home every night. On Fridays a weekly report for you to sign. GATOR folders will also go home primarily on Mondays with important papers from the school.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bloodworth

Dear Parents/Guardians,
It’s hard to believe the first two weeks are over already! We have a few important dates coming up. The BOG is Wednesday, August 16th. It is important to get a good night’s sleep, and to eat breakfast that morning. Money for the Government field trip ($4.00) is due by August 31st. You can pay online, send in a check, or cash. August 18th is an early release, and August 31st is open house. Picture day is August 24th. Most of the times newsletters will be biweekly, but if there are important dates one may be sent earlier.
The class is starting to get into a routine. Part of Reading testing is almost complete, and reading groups will soon follow. We are working on having discussions about what we read. This is a huge part of our new reading program. The theme for this module is overcoming learning challenges. I will attach a list of some good books on this topic to read at home to support the unit. We also work on reading a story more than once to get different things out of the test we may have not noticed the first read though. We are also collecting for the Scholastic News Magazine ($6.05). The sooner we collect the money, the faster we can use this great resource in class. Reading homework will not always be an assigned item. Students should be reading each night for 20 minutes when we do not have an assigned item. Typically twice a week there will be an assigned question to answer in their homework notebook.
In social studies we are working on the government unit. The class created rules together, and learned about right and responsibilities. We also went over the branches of government. A study guide will be going home on August 21st. The social studies government assessment will be August 22nd. After that we will move on to science.
In math we are working on place value and adding and subtracting. We are just moving into rounding. I know some of the methods we use are different, but we do take notes in class. Students are encouraged to bring their math notebook back and forth to help with the methods. It is very important that homework is completed each night for math. We move through lessons quickly, and the homework helps support what we learned in class. Math homework will not be given on nights we have an assessment.
Students will use a green folder for homework that will go home every night. On Fridays a weekly report goes home for you to sign. GATOR folders will go home primarily on Mondays with important papers from the school. Please join the PTA Member Hub. This is a great way to stay connected to what I going on in the school.
Our daily schedule is:
Looking forward to a great year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bloodworth

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Today was a great day for your child in 3rd grade. We had a lot of fun together. I can tell it is going to be a great year. Throughout the day the students got to know one another by filling out a favorites card and working together on a variety of activities. The class came up with procedures and expectations for our room. The students also went over rules and procedures for the school building as well.
I also want to introduce myself and share a little bit of information about me. I moved to North Carolina seventh years ago from New Hampshire. This is my eleventh year teaching, my seventh at Alston Ridge. I graduated from Plymouth State University with an Elementary Education degree, and from New England College with my Masters in Literacy and Language Arts. For fun I like to read, play soccer, spend time with friends, cheer on the Patriots, play with my dog and cat, and go to the beach.
I can’t tell you how excited I am about the upcoming school year! Communication is very important to me. I want you to feel free to email me at [email protected]. I would like to set up a group email to cut down on paper use. You can also call the school, but email is the best way to get in touch with me. You can also write a note in the agenda book as well. If your child is out sick or going home a different way, please send in a handwritten note.
There will be nightly reading and math homework. Students will use a green folder for homework that will go home every night. Fridays the folder will contain a weekly report for you to sign. GATOR folders will also go home primarily on Mondays with important papers from the school.
Our daily schedule is:
Looking forward to a great year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bloodworth
